Matthew was an apostle of Jesus. According to Christian tradition, he was the author of the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament. However, the gospels were almost certainly written by anonymous authors.

In the New Testament, Matthew is introduced as a tax collector from the town of Capernaum on the shores of Galilee. He is called Levi in Luke 5:27 Bible-icon.png and in Mark 2:14 Bible-icon.png.
