Comments[edit]

Here are some comments I have about various entries. Please add your own comments, as desired (remember to sign them). All wikis not commented upon I either didn't know and didn't bother to check, or knew/assumed wouldn't be relevant to our purposes. - dcljr 03:08, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

acronym (http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?String=exact&Acronym=$1)
Might be useful. - dcljr
cache (http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:$1)
Google's cache might be useful on occasion, but we can probably just leave links to it in external-link style. - dcljr
creationmatters (http://www.ourpla.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?$1)
Hmm. Might be relevant. - dcljr
dejanews (http://www.deja.com/=dnc/getdoc.xp?AN=$1)
See Google Groups entry below. This site doesn't exist anymore (not for Usenet posts, anyway). - dcljr
dictionary (http://www.dict.org/bin/Dict?Database=*&Form=Dict1&Strategy=*&Query=$1)
Okay, but I prefer Wiktionary or Merriam-Webster personally. Google's "define:" feature might be just as good. - dcljr
disinfopedia (http://www.disinfopedia.org/wiki.phtml?title=$1)
Maybe?? - dcljr
evowiki (http://www.evowiki.org/index.php/$1)
Definitely relevant (see Wikipedia article), but couldn't bring up site when I tried it. - dcljr
It looks as though "evowiki.org" comes and goes, and the preferred URL seems to be wiki.cotch.net. I tried to fix Iron Chariots Wiki:Interwiki map (full), but it doesn't seem to have taken. Suggestions? --Arensb 20:04, 29 June 2008 (CDT)
google (http://www.google.com/search?q=$1)
Definitely. - dcljr
googlegroups (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=$1)
Links to old Usenet posts might be relevant (e.g., for "in the field" examples of arguments/fallacies), but do we really need internal-link style for such links? - dcljr
imdb (http://us.imdb.com/Title?$1)
Sure, but maybe we should distinguish between, say, imdbTitle and imdbName. - dcljr
jargonfile (http://sunir.org/apps/meta.pl?wiki=JargonFile&redirect=$1)
Maybe. - dcljr
lutherwiki (http://www.lutheranarchives.com/mw/index.php/$1)
Might have been relevant, but doesn't seem to exist anymore. - dcljr
mediazilla (http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/$1)
Might be a good idea to keep this around for linking to known bugs in MediaWiki software (i.e., in discussions on talk pages). Sure, not many of us (if anyone) will be doing that right now, but hopefully we'll be getting more wiki experts joining us soon. - dcljr
metawiki (http://sunir.org/apps/meta.pl?$1)
Never used this before, but appears to be a multiple-wikis-at-once search engine. - dcljr
wikicities (http://www.wikicities.com/index.php/$1)
This is just an alias for Wikia now, since the site was renamed. - dcljr
wikinfo (http://www.wikinfo.org/wiki.php?title=$1)
I don't use it, but it's basically a non-NPOV version of Wikipedia. Might be useful for some. - dcljr
wikispecies (http://species.wikipedia.org/wiki/$1)
The only Wikimedia sister project I didn't include (oh, except for the new Wikiversity, which probably will eventually have relevant content). I don't think it's (Wikispecies, that is) really useful for us as it stands now, but maybe we should keep it for "completeness"? - dcljr
wikt / wiktionary (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/$1)
Yes to Wiktionary, but we should use the second form (wiktionary), not the abbreviated form. - dcljr

Unless you feel an existing entry needs to be modified or deleted, there's no real point in comments on the existing entries. What might be a great idea is to use the custom list as a model to create a list of favorite/preferred/frequently used links and we can include them on the Interwiki map page. - Sans Deity 18:40, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

Basically I was thinking we could "streamline" our interwiki map by eliminating sites that clearly won't be of use to us in this wiki. So I was listing the sites that I thought would be of (possible) use, the idea being that the others could be deleted. IOW, I agree that having a shorter, more focused "canonical" list is desirable, but I was thinking that that would be our "full" list. OTOH, I guess the "irrelevant" entries aren't hurting anyone, so, fine, we can keep the full default list (with changes). As for the "preferred" list you speak of, you are suggesting we expand the current custom list to a more complete "recommended" list, right? You're not saying we should create yet another list?! <g> - dcljr 17:00, 19 September 2006 (CDT)
Correct. - Sans Deity 17:23, 19 September 2006 (CDT)
I started to edit the various "map" pages to reflect this, but I haven't actually gotten around to expanding the custom map. - dcljr 12:52, 28 September 2006 (CDT)

Resolved[edit]

commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/$1)
I've suggested the longer, but more precise, prefix WikimediaCommons. (Remember, these site prefixes are completely case-insensitive.) - dcljr
  • Added the WikimediaCommons link to the database - Sans Deity 18:40, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
metawikipedia (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/$1)
Yes, definitely (for info about MediaWiki software, discussion of general wiki issues, etc.), but I've suggested the more logical WikimediaMeta prefix.
  • Added the WikimediaMeta link to the database - Sans Deity 18:40, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
wikia (http://www.wikia.com/wiki/index.php/$1)
Probably don't need the main site, although I've suggested WikiaCentral for it. More important are the individual wiki(a)s, for which I've suggested WikiaSite. There's probably already a relevant wikia there, although I haven't checked. - dcljr
  • Added WikiaSite and WikiaCentral links to the database - Sans Deity 18:40, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

WikiBible[edit]

Matt, can you explain to me why this link doesn't work? biblewiki:Genesis 1 - Kazim 14:49, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

First of all, according to the request page, it should be [[WikiBible:Genesis 1]]. However, the reason it doesn't work is the same reason that the correct format wouldn't work either - it hasn't been added to the database. The request page is where we'll request an discuss changes we'd like to make to the map and once they're added, they'll be on the full page list (or, more accurately on the custom list which is transcluded to the full page list. From now until it's time to head to Ninfa's I'm going to be working on the map - adding the requested items, updating the database and the maps and (hopefully) the [[WikiBible:Genesis 1]] link will be working later tonight. - Sans Deity 17:12, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
The WikiBible entry you suggested doesn't work, I think the site may have been changed. - Sans Deity 17:27, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
Ok, I found the problem. You added the "biblewiki" entry to the list on the full list page. That doesn't actually "do" anything. What has to happen is that someone posts their suggestion on the requests page and then, I have to hand-edit the database to make the changes. I'm adding your requested biblewiki now and it should be working in just a few minutes. - Sans Deity 18:15, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
I've not only added your "biblewiki" link but I added two additional links to BibleGateway.com (biblegatewayniv and biblegatewaykjv) to cover the two most popular version. - Sans Deity 18:28, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
biblegatewaykjv:Genesis 1:1
Works great! Thanks. --Kazim 18:33, 7 September 2006 (CDT)
