The Selfish Gene is a 1976 book by Richard Dawkins focusing on the gene-centered view of evolution.

The title has caused confusing by making people believe that evolution automatically results in a selfish morality.[1] This is a misunderstanding because a gene's tendency to propagate only has an indirect relationship to a creatures behaviour e.g. an altruistic behaviour gene might propagate well (i.e. selfishly) in the gene pool.

The book is also known for coining the term "meme".
