The first part of the Book of Kings (also called 1 Kings, pronounced First Kings) is the eleventh book of the Old Testament. It describes how David dies and Solomon succeeds him. It devotes a large section to the construction of the temple at Jerusalem. After Solomon's death, Israel rebels against Judah, which is afterwards a separate nation. The history of both nations and their leaders is recounted, and they are classified as "good" or "bad" depending on whether they condemn or approve of the worship of gods besides Yahweh. The prophet Elijah and his successor Elisha are mentioned here for the first time.
