The first part of the Book of Samuel (also called 1 Samuel, pronounced First Samuel) is the ninth book of the Old Testament. It describes the life of the prophet Samuel and the reign of the first king of Israel, Saul, up until his death. It also is the first book to mention David, and describes how Samuel anoints him, and the beginning of his rise to power.
