The claim that Atheists hate God is a common response to arguments that the scriptural God is unworthy of worship due to his atrocities, allowing evil to exist, being the cause of natural disasters, or other moral failings.

"whenever an atheist accuses God of immorality he is passing a condemning judgment upon God and displaying his moral contempt for Him. Therefore, in his contempt, he is revealing his hatred for the God he does not believe in.[1]"
"Recently, I have had a lot of conversations with atheists. Many express a strong hatred of God. I have been at a loss to explain this. How can you hate someone you don’t believe in? Why the hostility?[2]"

Counter arguments[edit]

A person can morally disapprove of a fictional character, e.g. Shakespeare's Macbeth, without hating the fictional character in any meaningful way.

God is often said to consider humans as morally inferior to himself. Does that make God hate humans?
