Cosmogony is the study of the origin and development of the universe.

Throughout human history, different cultures have developed different ideas about the origin of the universe. Some are purely mechanistic in nature; others rely on supernatural ideas such as gods. Some concentrate primarily on the Earth and others emphasize a larger context, such as a vast physical universe or some metaphysical realm.
