The character of Joseph in the book of Genesis was a son of Jacob and consequently the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Sold into slavery by his jealous half-brothers, he is notable for gaining favor with the pharaoh and for bringing Jacob's family into Egypt, where their descendants were later enslaved.
