"[T]he boy's father has to do his part. He needs to mirror and affirm his son's maleness. He can play rough-and-tumble games with his son, in ways that are decidedly different from the games he would play with a little girl. He can help his son learn to throw and catch a ball. He can teach him to pound a square wooden peg into a square hole in a pegboard. He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger." Joseph Nicolosi is a psychologist who is the current president of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), an organisation that provides reparative therapy.

Nicolosi graduated from the California School of Psychology in 1977. In 1980, he started a psychological clinic that supported Catholic ideals. Nicolosi was influental in starting NARTH as an organisation in 1992.

Nicolosi's views and therapeutic ideas

Nicolosi's views are generally in line with the ideas of earlier therapists like Charles Socarides. He--and his organization--consider homosexuality to be a form of psychopathology. He believes homosexuality to be caused unequivocally by poor parenting.

Nicolosi has even been known to attempt to treat children as young as three for "prehomosexuality".
