Talk:Gadarene swine

From Religions Wiki

Hehe, good old literalists again, fundamentalist or sceptical, never fail to amuse.

The story is about the Romans (hence the being is called "Legion", their basic military unit). The "Legion" is expelled from a Jewish person into pigs, which are unclean animals to the Jews. So it can be seen as a story about the occupying forces being driven out and put into "Gentile" animals. (The Prodigal Son story features pigs as well, although pork gobbling Gentiles probably overlook that aspect.)

There are many such hints in the canonical gospels that Jesus was either seen as an anti-Roman figure or his followers were anti-Roman. Among his followers were Zealots, and Iscariot (Sicarii?), arguably references to anti-colonial resistance. Such associations may be precisely why someone like Jesus would be executed by the Romans. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 109.249.184.245 (talkcontribs), 22:10, 6 February 2022
