Total depravity
Total depravity is the doctrine that humans are corrupt by nature and will inevitably sin and fail to obey God. It is considered to be true by many Protestant denominations, particularly those having Calvinist beliefs.
Counter arguments[edit]
Free will[edit]
A will that is predisposed to choose evil is not free, which contradicts a core Christian concept of free will.
Problem of evil[edit]
Why does God allow such a state of affairs? If true, total depravity raises the problem of evil and supports the argument from poor design.
Why do good things happen to bad people[edit]
"So the real question is, who [sic] do good things happen to bad people? Why does God send the rain on the just and the unjust? Why does He let blasphemers live?"
Jesus was human[edit]
If Jesus was fully human, he also had total depravity. [2]
"For this reason he [Jesus] had to be made like them, fully human in every way"
Humans are not reponsible for their sins[edit]
If humans have total depravity, they are not responsible for their sinful behaviour. [2] They therefore could not be held accountable by a just God.
